A Risky Faith

A Risky Faith

"Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point, which means, at the point of highest reality. A chastity or honesty or mercy which yields to danger will be chaste or honest or merciful only on conditions. Pilate was merciful till it became risky."

--C.S. Lewis, from the Screwtape Letters

C.S. Lewis not only hits the nail on the head regarding Pontius Pilate, but he nails it for me as well. How about you? Consider for a moment the things God asked of many heroes of the bible: Abraham, Joshua, Gideon, Nehemiah, etc. The things they accomplished required super-human faith. How was their faith manifested? By the courage it took to do what God asked of them. If any of them decided that what God was asking was too "risky," their stories would not have been in Scripture, and we would not be using them as examples of God's faithful promises!‚Äč

As you and I are given opportunities to express bold, godly faith, it always boils down to courage that demonstrates just how much we trust what God tells us in His word. In order to proclaim your faith publicly, in order to give sacrificially, in order to forgive others unconditionally, in order to live righteously, it all rests upon how courageous your faith in God is.

An act of godly faith always has an act of courage at its core. To Joshua the LORD said, "Be strong and of great courage, for the Lord is with you." To Gideon the LORD said, "Go in the strength you have and save Israel . . . Am I not sending you?" To the nation of Israel God said, "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine." How do you show bold faith? Trust in God's word. He never fails on what He promises.

You may ask how this relates to the New England Fellowship of Evangelicals. Well, as Rumney moves in directions that might require us to embrace bold changes, it might bring us to places outside our comfort zone. But Rumney's foundation was built upon risks taken by Mr. Wright. That foundation was built upon by risks taken by Tal McNutt. And now God has called Rumney to another ambitious endeavor. Rumney is mounting a "risky" mission to reach the people of New England. Rumney must be about our Father's business, which is to evangelize and disciple our guests and residents.

Let us boldly move ahead with the same fearless faith of those who laid our foundation. God has provided this place to be used for His glory. Pilate was given a brief moment in history, but he washed his hands of heroic glory. Likewise, we are given a majestic location to present the gospel of Jesus Christ. Let us never wash our hands of an opportunity that can affect someone's eternity!
